Hästens and Alan Waller discuss wool

Hästens is collaborating with Sweden's prime wool expert, Alan Waller.

What makes wool such a good component in beds?

In a few words, one can say that wool once emerged as a protection for
sheep, mammals, which to some extent are similar to us humans. And this protection has been fine-tuned for the last 40 million years. Wool works as a climate control system, providing warmth when it¹s cold and cooling us when it’s warm. The human skin is constantly giving off moisture – even if we aren’t conscious that we are sweating – humidifying the air closest to our skin. Wool takes care of this humidity, helping to keep us dry and maintain the right temperature. This means you can borrow warmth when you need it the most, and return the favor when you have surplus heat.

Has it been proved that wool’s positive qualities influence our sleep?

Yes. Sleep researchers have registered that we have a more profound and
relaxed sleep in wool bedding. They’ve also seen that we maintain a more even heartbeat and that we change position fewer times during the night.

What about wool production, seen through an environmental perspective?

First of all, wool is biodegradable. Secondly, if wool is produced sensibly,
pesticide use is low. Hästens uses wool from New Zealand, a pioneer in the wool world, standing for professionalism and innovation. For instance, they have developed measures for producing the whitest wool in the world, and implemented these measures on every level, all the way down to the individual farm.

What do you think of the new wool blend that Hästens and Wools of New
Zealand have developed?

The previous wool blend consisted of wool from both the back and the belly of the sheep. The new blend only uses wool taken from the back. This wool is generally better, especially for beds. The procedure used to wash the blend has been improved, making it possible to eliminate a larger amount of residual grease. The wool used in a Hästens bed is subjected to this washing process twice to ensure that the wool is of the highest quality.
