Cristian Zuzunaga

Many designers are being inspired by Hästens iconic blue-checked fabric. When Cristian Zuzunaga was asked to do a special design of a Hästens bed for the Handmade issue of Wallpaper magazine, he took the checked pattern to a new dimension, inspired by the colors of the sunrise. The Zuzunaga bed was being handmade in one unique piece in 2010 and it is still touring around the world as the masterpiece it is.

I never thought I would write a letter raving about a bed. When my husband told me he wanted to buy a Hastens bed and then told me the price, I thought he was absolutely crazy. Last fall he took me to your store to have a test lie. I must say I was impressed. I figured that if he was willing to spend the money then I wasn’t going to stop him. Our bed arrived and I have been singing its praises ever since. I suffer from bone spurs and degenerating discs in my neck, so sleeping comfortably has been an issue for me. The way the Hastens bed contours to every curve in your body is amazing. It is as you are being “sucked in” to the most comfortable sleep ever. The only problem is that I have a difficult time leaving it! This past weekend we checked into a hotel and I sat on the bed and felt incredibly homesick. I laugh now when I think of how I couldn’t imagine spending so much for a bed. Now, I realize how much time is spent in bed and how important it is to feel comfortable and sleep well. Hästens heritage

Hästens heritage goes back all the way to 1852, when the great great great grandfather of Jan Ryde finished as an apprentice and became a saddle making master with his his own business. Back in those days, the saddle makers where also the mattress makers. Already back then Per-Adolf Jansson knew that horsehair was a superior material for creating beds.

The art of building quality beds by hand

Hästens was founded in Sweden in 1852 and the factory has always been located in an area of Köping, approximately 150 kilometers from Stockholm. Over the years, Hästens has become an appreciated place to work, where young craftsmen get educated by the Master craftsmen in the art of building quality beds by hand. In 2006, Jan Ryde, the fifth generation of Hästens, was awarded the citizen of the region as recognition of his contribution to the region.

Business man of the Year

In 1995 Jan Ryde, the owner and fifth generation of Hästens, was awarded Business man of the Year in the local area. It is an honorary award handed to people who have made a difference for the region.

Certified by the Swan

All Hästens beds are certified by the Swan – the Nordic eco label. Hästens was the first Swedish manufacturer to get all beds in the range certified. For us, this comes naturally. Being ecologically friendly is a natural part of Hästens as we have always used natural material and created beds that are not only good for you when sleeping in them, but also good for the environment. We would like to thank you for all the time and effort you showed us during and after our purchase of the Hastens Bed. I read an article about your special bed which I may add had the highest ranking of all the beds the article previewed. I had major back surgery so we were in the market for the “perfect” bed. Your entire staff is extremely knowledgeable about your product and why it is the “best bed”. It certainly is! The bed is exactly what you promised it would be …maybe more.

As more and more people are started to discover the Hästens beds, we noticed that there were a demand for our beds also outside of Sweden. It was a success; we did not know that the demand for high quality beds in natural material was that great. One of the recognitions we received was the Best International Growth Company in Sweden, an award handed out by Ernst & Young.

Royal Court

In 1952, the King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden selected Hästens as the bed supplier of the Royal Court. And ever since, with a new two new generations taking over the operations of Hästens and the Carl XVI Gustaf, the son of Gustaf VI Adolf, inherited the throne, Hästens have had the pleasure of purveying the Royal Court and the royal family.

In Larvik, a small town of Norway with 41 000 inhabitants, the launch of a new rebuilt Hästens Store was celebrated with great pride. Today you can find Hästens in over 30 countries.

Export company of the year 2007

Jan Ryde, the fifth generation of the family, has been awarded many times for the great work of bringing the best bed to more and more places around the world. In 2007, Hästens was the export company of the year in Sweden and Jan Ryde received the award from Carl XVI Gustaf, the King of Sweden. It was not the first time Hästens got royal glory, already in 1952 Hästens was selected as purveyor of the Royal Court. At that time, Carl XVI Gustaf was only six years old and Jan Ryde was yet not born.

Sweet dreams – the Italian way.  In Case and Country magazine the ultimate dreams can only be experienced in a Hästens. The color on the other hand – is for the consumer to choose. The Hästens beds are in fact available in 21 colors – for you to choose from, all using the iconic checked pattern except one; the striped S12. The S12 is actually an older design than the blue check and since the Hästens beds last for a very long time, many of our customers are coming back and wanting to upgrade their top mattress to refresh their bed. So as a service to our valued customers we keep the fabric in the assortment – even though it is not checked.
